It seems like everyone and their mother has a newsletter. To date, my mother doesn’t write one, but I think that’s mainly because she doesn’t sit down long enough to write anything longer than a 2-paragraph message.
Newsletters are as common as email at this point, with services like Substack and Ghost and Convertkit (we’ll get to all of them in a minute) filling up my Gmail every morning and giving me something to read at practically any point during the day.
Yes, sometimes, it’s a complete pain in the ass and the last thing I want to do after working all day staring at words is to go read more words, but I’m getting about 60–75% of my information from newsletters. Everything from prison abolition to addiction to social work to gaming, all the spheres and pools in my orbit end up in the big giant Gmail queue.
Everyone’s got one, and depending on your field (publishing, creative writing, side hustles, blogging, etc) they’re critical.
